Exchange rate =

You can lock in at a rate with travellers checks but:

Looking at Westpacs rates (guessing everyone else is similar) you get a lower rate for T/C vs ATM withdrawal (4% lower from quick check)

So, commisions wise, ATM in Japan using Westpac costs $5 + 2% of the AUD amount, travellers check is 4% (if there are no commissions cashing them at the post office etc - I'm checking about that).

My daily limit on my card is $1000 - so me ATMing it vs me buying a fat ...

Just a heads up

Got a call from Monash Abroad telling me I wasn't enrolled in the summer units yet - have to be to recieve the grant. So anyway, chased it up this morning. Turns out that Monash have lost my forms or something like that (it turns out I was supposed to give them to the managing faculty of my degree, which is Commerce - however Arts should have forwarded them on). Anyway, of the two forms I handed in to the Arts admin desk (of which I have reciepts for), there is no trace - ...

Kyoto, homeland of Geisha, is 65 mins from Kansai (Osaka) airport, and is prob for ppl lookin for a quiet scenary to relax in (say 'Onsen' ), rather than busy city Tokyo. It is also known for its temples, and you can stay at one (cheap and have comfortable bed like hostel but offer vegetarian breakfasts/meditation sessions along with the package , nid to make special arrangement)

In Nikko (2 1/2 hrs train away from Tokyo o_0)

Edo wonderland Nikko, A recreation of Tokyo in the Edo era (1800s). The emphasis is on fun, rather than education; don't miss the action-packed ninja show or the "Hell Temple" haunted house. In fact, a glowing Buddha statue signals your departure from hell at the end of the obstacle course

Just thought I'd share my previous experience re accessing funds in Japan

I'm with Westpac, who don't have any reciprocal banks in Japan (not sure about other banks, but it might be worth checking). My Westpac ATM card has the Cirrus logo on it, which is handy, because at all the post offices (at least, all the ones I visited) there were ATMs which had Cirrus as well, so for a $5 fee (or thereabouts) I could withdraw funds. Apparently there are also similar ATMs at 7/11 etc
